Mapua 2021 - 4th Tasman National ART Awards - Biggest Public Attendance Ever

Mapua Community Hall
Like many community organisations in the Tasman and Nelson area that are run by volunteers, the Tasman Art Focus Group is no exception. Once you stepped into the door of the Mapua Community Hall, where the Tasman National Art Awards were held and where all the art was displayed, you were met by volunteers looking after the day to day running of the exhibition and attending the sales desk.

There are many other volunteers the Judges, Selectors, packers, curators and odd-jobbers, then finally the working committee members, Anna Pickersgill-Brown, Sue England, Stephanie Buck, Paul Deacon, Lewis Della Bosca Patron of The Arts Focus Group, Paul Nankivell, Peter Copp, and Glenys Forbes (Chair). Glenys Forbes said “My team of 8 volunteers have worked very hard to bring this event about and I am very proud of them.”

All the Art that was submitted, was considered by a group of Judges for the display and then out of this group of paintings, a separate group of Judges then choose the winners. All the paintings selected in the first group were on display in the Mapua Community Hall.

There was an exquisite selection of art from all over New Zealand chosen for the National Art Awards, something for everyone. The exhibition took place in Mapua and ran from Sunday 3rd October to the 16th October.

Last year the Awards were cancelled due to Covid-19 and this year the grand opening had to be cancelled due to Level 2, but fortunately the exhibition could still go ahead.

Just as the Tasman National Art Awards rely on volunteers it is also very dependent on sponsorship, some have been named below but there are many other sponsors from all over Tasman and Aotearoa.

Supreme Award Winner

Pauline Neal of Riwaka showed me the Supreme Award Winner an oil on board by Wendy Lineham of Nelson, called “Sunday 3pm Lockdown 2020 NZ.” The Judges comments: “A pertinent little painting, intense, current, quirky and surrealist, with a radiance that draws the viewer into an uncomfortable interior.”

There are four Merit Awards Winners in no order:

Jane Duncan (upper Moutere) called “Still Point” In oils. The Judges comments: “A skilfully, finely painted work in the round, capturing a meditative moment which draws the viewer in to enjoy the detail in every aspect and their own contemplation.”

Sierra Roberts (Wanaka) called “Rosa With Peonies” Acrylic on panel. The Judges comments: “A powerful and iconic image. A celebration of age, wisdom and beauty.”

Ruth Killoran (Christchurch) called “Tree Stories” Watercolour and ink. The Judges comments: “A thought provoking work an ecological message, embracing nature and global themes. The more you look, the more you see!”

Maia Hetariki (Nelson)  called “Ruby” In oils. The Judges comments: “A sensitive, gentle, painterly portrait capturing a timeless pose with an old masterly quality. Skilfully rendered and beautifully resolved.”

The Watercolour Award Art Focus - Medium Award:

Siobhan Rosenthal (Auckland) “The Picnic I” Watercolour. The Judges Comments “A joyful, naive watercolour in pointillist style, evoking Seurat’s sunny, riverside moment. A picnic inviting the viewer to partake in the feast.”

(Sponsored by Jill Volmer - Accountant and TAFG)

The Winner of the People’s Choice Award :

Jana Branca (New Plymouth) was the winner of the people’s choice award, with the portrait called “Jay”. A colourful portrait in oil on canvas of a contemporary man deep in thought.

(Sponsored by NBS)

The exhibition was well supported by the Tasman public with record crowds going to see the event. Pauline Neal of Riwaka showed off her two exhibits below:

Pauline Neal (Riwaka) showing her exhibits "Nostalgic Hunt" and "Culinary Discovery" both in Charcoal and graphic pencil.

Left an oil painting by Jane Duncan (Upper Moutere) "Burst" and right by Indigo Wise (Takaka) "Tue Flight" in ink, pencil, wash and  gouache.

The painting by Jane Duncan presents a young man growing up in a very complex LGBTQ+ world. A very well presented painting and was my Peoples Choice.
