Phase one of Nelson City Council's Housing Reserve is underway

The $12 million Housing Reserve was established in November 2020 following Council’s sale of 142 community housing units to Kāinga Ora.

In a meeting on Tuesday, 5 October, elected members heard from community housing providers Habitat for Humanity Nelson and the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust about the significant impact the funding would have in assisting them to deliver affordable housing projects in the near future.

Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese said the grants will allow the city to help those whose lives are affected by the housing shortage.
“Our community needs affordable housing now, and as housing costs continue to rise, we must act quickly."

“People who are our friends and neighbours are struggling to access a fundamental human right, secure and safe housing. We want to support projects that will provide safe, well-designed homes that keep people connected to their communities.”

Deputy Mayor Judene Edgar said she was looking forward to seeing proposals for housing that support those in the “missing middle” - people on relatively stable incomes who can struggle to find warm, secure housing.

“Every day, there is another article about the housing crisis. Every day, people are forced to shift because they lack secure, affordable housing. Every day, people are getting sick due to poor quality housing. The housing crisis leaves none of us untouched and we can only address it by working together.

“The housing reserve is a game-changer for Nelson, and by releasing $2m now, we can help much-needed projects get off the ground in the short term, while working to ensure the remainder of the fund can make a lasting contribution to housing in Nelson.

“We frequently talk about housing like it’s just a building, but what we are really talking about is a home; a safe haven, a sanctuary, a stable foundation. A place for children to be raised, older couples to enjoy their twilight years, and newlyweds to establish themselves. A place for laughter, love and memories. So today, we have taken an important step to help create a secure, safe, stable new start for people by supporting homes.”

Applications to Phase One of the Housing Reserve Grants Programme will be open for four weeks, from 7 October 2021 to 3 November 2021.

Applicants must be able to show a level of co-investment from other sources or partners alongside the amount of Housing Reserve grant money being sought and plans should feature environmentally responsible and low-maintenance design.

Applications will also be selected based on how closely they meet Council’s criteria, including the readiness and timeline of the project, design and environmental standards, and the applicant’s experience and track record

"To be or not to be"- Nelson Arts Festival makes further changes

Nelson Arts Festival announce changes

The Nelson Arts Festival Trust, the Children, Teachers, the Team, Artists, Crew and the Nelson and Tasman Community are devastated that the Nelson Arts Festival has to make major changes due to Covid.

With heartfelt sadness the Nelson Arts Festival announced:
Nelson Arts Festival has made the difficult decision to cancel its community events Mask Carnivale and Night Vision; two more shows, PechaKucha and Couch Stories; as well as the majority of its Pukapuka Talks literary events.

From the very beginning of the planning period for the 2021 Festival, the Nelson Festivals Trust and Nelson Arts Festival Team developed contingency plans for various scenarios. With the ongoing situation of Covid Level restrictions, the Team and Trust must keep the safety and wellbeing of our artists, crew, and the community as a priority.

Chair of the Nelson Festivals Trust, Brent Thawley says, “In the light of this week’s Government update on the Covid Levels, it is with doubly heavy hearts that we are having to make further changes to what the Nelson Festivals Trust is able to deliver in 2021 while keeping our community safe.

“With the current government strategy rolling out over the next 4 to 8 weeks, we anticipate it is very unlikely that Whakatū will be at a level where we can safely deliver our vision. Because of this, we have had to make further tough decisions, including cancelling Whakatū’s festival-favourite, the Mask Carnivale, the majority of the Pukapuka Talks literary programme, Night Vision, PechaKucha and Couch Stories.”

Two of the Pukapuka Talks sessions will now be free online events (details below).

The leadership team of Co-Creative Directors Rose Campbell and Lydia Zanetti and Community and Education Director Shanine Hermsen are devastated at having to make this decision. “We held on tightly to a spark of hope that we might have been able to safely gather as a community, but sadly, we continue to face too much uncertainty.

“We know the Mask Carnivale has a particular significance to our community. It’s especially heart-breaking to have to cancel the parade knowing the many hours of preparation already done by so many schools and community groups.

“We’re also deeply saddened that out comprehensive Pukapuka Talks programme won’t happen, and will truly miss the influx of 33 writers, poets, and commentators sharing their stories and perspectives.

“The Trust and team share our huge disappointment with all artists, producers, crew, venues, funders, sponsors and audiences who have generously engaged with Nelson Arts Festival 2021, working together towards a spectacular experience for our community and everyone involved.

“What we take away from this is the incredible strength of collaboration, the connections we’ve built and the creativity we’ve experienced – together, we can look forward to 2022 and beyond.

“We want to take this opportunity to thank our valued funders and sponsors for your heartfelt support and ongoing encouragement, with particular thanks to our core supporter Nelson City Council.”

The Festival is continuing with plans to present a bespoke programme, including

two free digital sessions from the Pukapuka Talks programme:

The Mirror Book (with Charlotte Grimshaw, chaired by Miro Bilbrough)
Once Were Hippies (with Miro Bilbrough, chaired by Steve Braunias)

Plus:
Writing Home: An Antidote to Feeling Stranded (our free digital project with commissioned writers including Hinemoana Baker, Paula Morris, Mohamed Hassan, Rajorshi Chakraborti & more to be announced)

Alongside these digital elements, the festival will present the following – all possible in Level 2:
Pure Psychic Automatism (Ruby Solly’s writing workshop - Sold Out)
Nelson City Centre ArtWalk Tour
- Through The Eye of Whakatū (Nelson Provincial Museum)
Ano me He Wharepuungawerewere and Repose (Refinery ArtSpace)
He Raranga Kōrero: Weaving Conversations (The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū
Silver. Stone. Wood. Bone. (produced by Chamber Music NZ, please refer to them for further information)

The Festival is offering full refunds (including booking and credit card fees) to those who have purchased tickets to cancelled shows. Those who hold tickets to The Mirror Book and Once Were Hippies will also be eligible for a refund

SH60 Tākaka Hill Waka Kotahi repairs team – September 2021

The Tākaka Hill repairs project has been disrupted by major weather events through late winter, early spring with more slips and by the recent Alert Level 4 lockdown. But as you will see below, work is continuing, and good progress is being made. Waka Kotahi are still on track to have two lanes open by the end of the year.

Following is the work Waka Kotahi have completed during September:

  • Site 6 - The retaining wall is now complete, and the new culvert has been installed.
  • Site 7 - The new pavement has also been laid, surfacing completed, and guardrail works have started.
  • Site 9 - The new pavement has been constructed, surfacing completed, and guardrail works have started.
  • Site 11 – The retaining wall is now 100% complete and pavement construction has started.
  • Site 13 - The retaining wall is 100% complete, and the second of the two new culverts have been installed. Pavement repairs have been completed, ready for the new surfacing to be laid.
Challenges on site

The winter 2021 floods, intense rainfall and serious slips have continued to impact the site.

The most recent was last Thursday when heavy rain caused two slips within close proximity of each other. The crew worked around the clock to clear the slip debris and have the road reopened the following day.

Recent rainfall and subsequent slips required a full overnight road closure to clear slip debris

Plan ahead for 5-night road closure late November

In late November Waka Kotahi have their final 5-night road closure that will enable the crew to complete surfacing works. This work is weather dependent. Waka Kotahi will advise when the dates are confirmed.

If you need access over the hill for night work or essential commitments, please email takakahill@nzta.govt.nz or call Kane Reihana on 027 886 4508. They will do their best to accommodate your needs, however Waka Kotahi cannot guarantee access.

Access is always available for emergency services throughout the closure.

Keeping cyclists safe

Just a reminder that people venturing over the hill on their bikes can call the freephone 0800 909 605 or 021 226 9664 when they arrive at either end of the lights to be picked up. The phone number is displayed at each set of traffic lights.

Team shout out!

The whole Tākaka Hill Waka Kotahi team would like to give a huge shoutout to everyone who uses this road for being so patient and understanding over the last month as they have been challenged by COVID-19 restrictions, bad weather and a 11-night closure.

Remember there is one more planned 5-night closure late November.

Weather permitting, Waka Kotahi are on the home stretch i'm sure all those residents of the Bay will be pleased.

Nelson - Italian Film Festival - Pinocchio

Pinocchio

This 2019 film is a delightful movie for all the family!  Carlo Collodi's 1883 book ' The adventures of Pinocchio' is probably Italy's most favourite fairy tale. Like all good fairy tales, it is not just for children. Director Matteo Garrone has demonstrated a superb contemporary talent in this film.

In this version of Pinocchio, Geppetto is played by the infinitely endearing Robert Benigni, with a cast of brilliant Italian actors. This version remains true to the classic tale of a poor woodcarver Geppetto, who carves a wooden puppet that comes to life, causing mischief as he learns to be alive, negotiating rights and wrongs.

Garrone's film is exciting, tender and funny while still honouring the darkness of a classic fairy tale. This film presents some of the most beautiful sets and costume design you are likely to see. The inherent aesthetics of Garrone's film never distract from the picaresque narrative, characters, and magic of this classic story. Garrone's team use real, in-camera, special effects without digital trickery, and the result is breathtakingly beautiful.

This film has won awards for best costume design, best production design, best digital effects, best make-up, best hair and styling, best director, best supporting actor, best editing and best sound. It was no wonder that after the film there was loud applause, very unusual in a theatre these days.
