Behind the Agenda - Golden Bay Community Board

Behind the Agenda.  Golden Bay Community Board
Shops May Open on Easter Sunday In Golden Bay Ward.

Well Golden Bay you have got what you wanted!  But, you still have some work to do.

Background:

Tasman Council did run an informal community engagement together with Nelson City Council, and a joint community survey was undertaken concerning Sunday trading. Golden Bay was the only area that supported Sunday trading by 65%. The Golden Bay Board requested from Council that it have the ability to consider an Easter Trading policy specifically for Golden Bay.

Full Council approved this request but had to retain the final approval by full Council and in August the Board indicated it would prefer to consult on a policy that allowed shop owners in Golden Bay to choose whether to trade on Easter Sunday. It was seen as important for visitors that go to Golden Bay over the Easter to have more choice.

Board Meeting 12 October:

The Golden Bay Board considered the Draft Easter Sunday Trading Policy For Golden Bay on 12th October 2021 and approved the Draft Policy for the Golden Bay Ward to enable shops to trade on Easter Sunday and approved a public notice for public consultation between 29th October and 5th December 2021. After this consultation the Board will deliberate on the submissions and make recommendations to the Full Council for a final decision.

The Board will publicise the proposed policy through local media and make copies available on the Council website, Council service centres and libraries for the period of the consultation. So it is up to you in the Bay to put your submissions into the Board.

Mapua 2021 - 4th Tasman National ART Awards - Biggest Public Attendance Ever

Mapua Community Hall
Like many community organisations in the Tasman and Nelson area that are run by volunteers, the Tasman Art Focus Group is no exception. Once you stepped into the door of the Mapua Community Hall, where the Tasman National Art Awards were held and where all the art was displayed, you were met by volunteers looking after the day to day running of the exhibition and attending the sales desk.

There are many other volunteers the Judges, Selectors, packers, curators and odd-jobbers, then finally the working committee members, Anna Pickersgill-Brown, Sue England, Stephanie Buck, Paul Deacon, Lewis Della Bosca Patron of The Arts Focus Group, Paul Nankivell, Peter Copp, and Glenys Forbes (Chair). Glenys Forbes said “My team of 8 volunteers have worked very hard to bring this event about and I am very proud of them.”

All the Art that was submitted, was considered by a group of Judges for the display and then out of this group of paintings, a separate group of Judges then choose the winners. All the paintings selected in the first group were on display in the Mapua Community Hall.

There was an exquisite selection of art from all over New Zealand chosen for the National Art Awards, something for everyone. The exhibition took place in Mapua and ran from Sunday 3rd October to the 16th October.

Last year the Awards were cancelled due to Covid-19 and this year the grand opening had to be cancelled due to Level 2, but fortunately the exhibition could still go ahead.

Just as the Tasman National Art Awards rely on volunteers it is also very dependent on sponsorship, some have been named below but there are many other sponsors from all over Tasman and Aotearoa.

The Winner of the People’s Choice Award :

Jana Branca (New Plymouth) was the winner of the people’s choice award, with the portrait called “Jay”. A colourful portrait in oil on canvas of a contemporary man deep in thought.

The exhibition was well supported by the Tasman public with record crowds going to see the event. Pauline Neal of Riwaka showed off her two exhibits below:

Pauline Neal (Riwaka) showing her exhibits "Nostalgic Hunt" and "Culinary Discovery" both in Charcoal and graphic pencil.

Left an oil painting by Jane Duncan (Upper Moutere) "Burst" and right by Indigo Wise (Takaka) "Tue Flight" in ink, pencil, wash and  gouache.

The painting by Jane Duncan presents a young man growing up in a very complex LGBTQ+ world. A very well presented painting and was my Peoples Choice.

‘Super Saturday’ - A big day for Tahunanui Community Hub

The Tahunanui Community Hub Nelson

The Tahunanui Napoli (Community) came out in force today, Saturday the 16 October, to  get vaccinated at the Tahunanui Community Hub in Nelson.

This event led by Tahunanui Pharmacy in conjunction with Te Waka Hauora Māori Health NMDHB, the Tahunanui Medical Centre and the event was held and supported by Tahunanui Community Hub.

There were many volunteers helping who were actually staff across all four businesses and organizations. Kai parcels were donated by Sealords, Pataka kai, Kai rescue and Kai with love. Hamers and spot prizes were sponsored by local businesses. The hangi and free coffee were sponsered by NMDHB.

There were volunteers everywhere giving out free kai, food hampers, free coffee and free hangi. Everyone who had a jab were enjoying themselves with plenty to eat and spot prizes.

Mark French, the Operations Manager of the Hub who was working hard greeting people all day, said “that there were about two thirds of people turning up for their first vaccination and the rest were second vaccinations.” He said “he could not give me the exact numbers, but there was a steady stream all day.” Mark added “ that it was such a nice day for the event that it encouraged whanau to come out.”

Our local MP Rachel Boyack was at the Community Hub to give support to the effort also.

The Tahunanui Community Hub who do a lot for the local community have pulled one out of the bag today and a big shout out should go to all those who donated goods and their time. At 3pm about 87,000 people had been vaccinated Aotearoa wide.

MOTUEKA STATE CINEMA 'Special Event' This Is New Zealand -17th October

State Cinema Motueka

This is New Zealand will be presented at the State Cinema in Motueka with Hugh McDonald, Director and Graeme Moffat presenting it and doing a question and answer after the film at the State Cinema Motueka. This is a special event Sunday Night 17 October only.

The film is also showing at State Cinema in Nelson. Don't miss it!

This is New Zealand has been painstakingly digitally remastered by Weta Studios, Peter Jackson, and includes a full feature 1Hr 34m presentation.  This is New Zealand is a documentary film showcasing NZ scenery that was produced by the NZ National Film Unit for screening at the World Expo in Osaka in 1970. The film combined scenic images including aerial cinematography with rousing classical music such as Sibelius' Karelia Suite.

At Osaka this film was the star attraction at that event. It was a revolutionary film that introduced viewers to New Zealand in a glorious three-screen (three-camera) and (three projector) presentation. With highly inventive camera work and editing, it showed everyone where we are, who we are, and - taking advantage of the super-widescreen format - what a spectacularly beautiful land we live in. The film was seen by more than two million people at Expo 70, and by 350,000 more when it returned home afterwards. Hidden from view up until shown at the 2007 NZ Film Festival and now remastered by Weta Studios it is a must see.

Hugh Macdonald’s long filmmaking career encompasses historical epics, Oscar-nominated shorts, and lots of time on the road. Macdonald is probably best-known for the three-screen spectacular This is New Zealand. His two-decade long stint at the National Film Unit also saw him directing two episodes of the historical epic The Governor, and producing the first of many animated shorts.

Richmond a blush with Spring Flowers

Thanks to Tasman District Council and to their Reserves and Facilities Manager Richard Hollier. Richmond feels like a dream, especially in Spring and all year round, with so many flower gardens dotted here and there, a well planted Queen Street and the wonderful Washbourn Gardens.

Richard has been in his role for three and a half years, he oversees seven Tasman District Council staff working in the Reserves and Facilities team. He liaises closely with Nelmac, a local firm, who the garden maintenance is contracted out to by Council.

I asked Richard Hollier how he enjoyed his demanding job “Very much so - we have a diverse range of reserves, halls and facilities throughout our region and as you can appreciate there is a large area to cover.  Other things we are involved with are factoring in how we can enhance new growth housing areas, creating new or improved reserves as well as monitoring aspects like coastal erosion within our areas.”

I met some of the Nelmac team on a beautiful Richmond morning when I was taking in the spirit of the gardens. I had a chat with some of the gardeners and they all seemed to be enjoying the gardening.

Richard said “The Nelmac team are passionate about what they do and because of this the grounds and surrounds are kept in the great condition you have seen. Spring is when all the work undertaken throughout the year comes to the fore with all the colours and new growth on display.”

The Council and Staff work hard for the community, it shows itself in the little things like the gardens. The Washbourn Gardens and the Shade House are the perfect places for the Richmond community to visit and get away from the hard pressure and rush of life these days.

Jellyfish are reported on Nelson's coastline

Lion's mane jellyfish

Nelson City Council have received reports of jellyfish (including Lion’s mane) washing up on Nelson’s coastlines including Tahunanui, Monaco and the Harbour now that the water temperature is increasing for spring.

These jellyfish are usually found in the water, but can also sting once up on the sand and the stings can cause minor welts, so please stay clear of these jellyfish and keep any children and dogs at a safe distance.

Historically, Lion's mane jellyfish give quite a sting, so consult a doctor if swelling or weals are severe. In the meantime, it is recommended to scrape the area with a clean stick or remove the tentacle with tweezers if you have them to hand, then rinse the area with warm water to reduce swelling.

For more info go to the Nelson City Council Facebook page.
